Flying to Lugano — what to know
Which airport should you fly into for Lugano?
Lugano is within driving distance of five international airports, and the right one depends on your route and schedule. Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the busiest and our most requested transfer — 76 km, 60–80 minutes, with the widest choice of intercontinental flights. Milan Linate (LIN, 92 km) is smaller and faster to clear, which suits short European business trips. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY, 88 km) mostly serves low-cost carriers.
On the Swiss side, Zurich Airport (ZRH, 205 km) avoids the border crossing entirely and is often the better choice in winter or when connecting onto Swiss domestic flights. Lugano Airport (LUG, 8 km) is the closest of all but has very limited scheduled service. When comparing fares, weigh the ticket price against the drive: a cheaper flight into Bergamo can cost you an extra hour on the road.
How an airport pickup works
For arrivals we track your flight in real time from the moment it departs. If you land early or the flight is delayed, the pickup time shifts automatically — you never pay for waiting caused by the airline. At Malpensa we cover both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. At Zurich, Linate, Bergamo and Geneva the meeting point is the main arrivals area unless you ask for something else. The price is fixed and confirmed before the journey, so it does not change with traffic or the time of day.
Departures, border crossings and early flights
For departures we plan backwards from your check-in time, adding a buffer for traffic on the A2 motorway and for the Switzerland–Italy border if you fly from an Italian airport. Border queues at Chiasso can add 15–30 minutes at peak hours, and we build that into the schedule rather than leaving it to chance.
Very early departures are common on this route — we operate around the clock, including 3 a.m. pickups from Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno and Ascona. If you travel with a family, skis or several large suitcases, say so when booking and we will send a minivan instead of a saloon car.
